TIPS
1. Do not discuss the facts of your case with anyone except your attorney.
2. Do not write or sign anything regarding the facts of your case.
3. Do not consent to any search of your person or property.
4. Do not consent to anyone taking a voice, handwriting, hair, blood, urine, or DNA sample from you.
5. Do not consent to any physical examination of yourself. Do not remove any article of your clothing or display any part of your body to be examined or photographed.
6. If the police have a search warrant you must permit them to execute the warrant (even if the warrant is later shown to be invalid). While the police are executing the warrant, however, (a) do not talk with them (b) do not answer any questions (c) do not react to anything they find and (d) do not assist them in any way.
7. Do not submit to any polygraph examination.
8. Do not try on any articles of clothing for anyone.
9. If you are required to participate in a lineup, insist that your attorney be notified in advance so that your attorney can be present and observe the procedure.
10. Do not send notes or messages to any law enforcement officer or prosecutor. Contrary to what you may believe, these people are not your friends. Their job is to prosecute you and send you to prison.
11. If you are contacted by any law enforcement officer or prosecutor regarding your case, do the following:
- a. tell them you are represented by an attorney;
- b. tell them your attorney has instructed you not to discuss the facts of the case with anyone;
- c. get their names and law enforcement agency; and
- d. notify your attorney as soon as possible.
